There are a lot of things about owning a business that I didn't understand. Slowly, over time, I started figuring it out. The single hardest thing to sort out is brand.
One would think that is the easiest part, right? Colours, fonts, design...and, for some, that may be true on the surface. Those parts are easy. It's what's behind the brand that gets difficult.
And that is why branding guides are so very important.
Branding guides help us define the why of what we do what we do. Why do I have a square on point behind my business name? Why the colours? Why the particular pictures that I choose? Why? Why? Why??
A branding guide helps us put boundaries around all the things. It adds definition where it was once fluid.
What exactly goes into a branding guide? There's the easy parts: logo, fonts, colours. Then there's the not as easy parts: core values will influence these items, the feeling we want people to have when they interact with our brand, the voice we speak with and more.
When a person comes to my website I want them to feel comforted, calm and get a sense of order and control. I want to communicate that their problems are not actually problems for me, but opportunities for finding a solution, that I am good at what I do and they are in good hands with me.
As a small business owner it can be extremely difficult to be able to sort through all of this, putting reason and words to all of our choices. Without help it's easier to chuck it into a drawer and ignore it.
There is a wealth of graphic designers and VA's out there who are very skilled at teasing out these tangled and intertwined ideas. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on a big company. Find another small business whose look and style you are attracted to. As for samples of their work, read their testimonials. You'll soon find a person to work with that will be able to guide you in the right direction. Once that happens, it'll be magic. Your business will feel right at an instinctual and gut level.
Do you have questions or want to know more? I have connected with some fabulous graphic designers who can help you take what you have in mind and make it a reality. From there I can help you with a branding guide.
